Alternative Therapies for Children with Behavioural Problems and Learning Difficulties

The story of a parent searching for solutions.

Sam's Story

It's a frustrating time for parents of children who present with behavioural problems or learning difficulties. Unsure of where to start you are often bombarded with opinions from all directions... from well meaning in-laws, teachers who think that you must be doing something wrong in the discipline department, to doctors who send your child for an eye test, a hearing test and a psychological evaluation, only to tell you that your child is "normal".

A parent knows when there is something not-quite-right with their child. I can tell you from my experience that "normal" is not always liveable! Normal often means that your child may really excel at some things and have no idea about other things, common in children with learning difficulties.

My son Sam has displayed ADHD-like symptoms for many years. His childcare centre described him as a "difficult child" in the early years, and once he started school, the problems seemed to escalate to the point where I actually considered medication might be a sane option.

It wasn't until attending a talk with Switched-On-Kids, that I came to the realisation that most of Sam’s learning difficulties could be linked to his birth. Sam was born over 10 weeks premature by Caesarean section. Medically, he was fine - eyesight and hearing good, 10 fingers and ten toes... perfect! Or so they told us...

We have undertaken various "alternate" therapies, which I am certain have all helped Sam in one way or another. Overall he went from being threatened with suspension in 1994 to topping his class in 1996!

Recently we decided to try lymphatic drainage massage with Di & Linda Morrow. Lymph fluid washes over all of the cells in the body, delivering nutrients to the cells and eliminating the toxins. It seemed sensible that improving health on a cellular level was a good thing.

After the first two treatments Sam was relaxed for a few hours, but was explosive and emotional for the remainder of the week. I put this down to his hormone imbalance (common in 10 year old boys), but as with most other therapies we encountered, often there was an initial upset before things started to take effect.

We have now had 5 treatments. What a change... Sam is comfortable in his own skin, cuddly and relaxed. We took him to play indoor soccer for the first time and he looked so co-ordinated... he even scored a goal! I constantly see him cuddling his little sister and brother. He is considerate of other people's feelings and affectionate plus much more co-operative and easy to reason with.

I have now booked all of our family in for treatments. I believe that anyone can benefit from Di and Linda’s full body lymphatic drainage, which includes gentle work on the head.

Thank you Di & Linda!

Warm regards, Karen Hassall
